- Run the elimination: everything on the circuit unplugged, the box confirmed dry, any upstream GFCI reset, and no sign of recent wiring work.
- Press and hold RESET firmly. A worn device gives it away — the button won't stay in at all, or clicks and releases immediately with nothing plugged in and no fault present.
- Factor in age and exposure: a GFCI roughly 10–15 years old, or one that's lived outdoors through Canadian winters, is a plausible worn-out device even when nothing else is wrong.

report Prove it's dead, and keep LINE and LOAD straightTurn off the breaker and verify at the outlet with a non-contact voltage tester — both halves — before you start. No tester, no job. The one step that makes a GFCI swap different from a plain outlet: the incoming feed must land on the LINE terminals and any protected outlets on LOAD. Reverse them and the new GFCI won't reset, or worse, will reset while leaving downstream outlets unprotected. And never solve a stubborn GFCI by installing a standard receptacle — that strips the protection the code requires here. Check the legal note for your province: in Quebec this is licensed work, and in Ontario it generally needs an ESA notification. If any of this is more than you signed up for, it's a fast, inexpensive visit for an electrician.
Replace like-for-like with a CSA-certified GFCI receptacle of the same amperage (tamper-resistant, and weather-resistant if it's outdoors — both current Canadian Electrical Code expectations for those locations), wiring the feed to LINE and any protected outlets to LOAD exactly as the old one was. Prove the circuit dead first, keep the LINE/LOAD pairs straight, and check the legal note for your province before starting. Never substitute a standard outlet for the GFCI.

- Photograph the wiring, then note which wires land on LINE (the incoming feed) and which on LOAD (outlets protected downstream). Getting this pair right is the whole job — mixing them up leaves downstream outlets unprotected.
- Fit the new GFCI: feed to LINE, downstream to LOAD, ground to green, wiring under the screw terminals. Match amperage and choose tamper-resistant (and weather-resistant outdoors).
- Restore power, press RESET, and confirm protection with a plug-in GFCI tester — pressing its test button should trip the outlet. If it won't trip on test, stop and call an electrician; the protection isn't working.
