A GFCI outlet won't reset

A GFCI that won't reset is frustrating, but nine times out of ten it's protecting you from a real fault rather than failing — and the fix is often free. The move is to remove what it's reacting to, not to force it back on. The one exception is an outlet that's warm, buzzing, or scorched: that one gets its breaker turned off, not fiddled with.

In Canadian homes, start by unplugging everything on the circuit — every cord in this outlet and in any outlet that went dead with it — then press RESET firmly.   1. Was it raining, humid, or freezing-then-thawing recently, or did the outlet get sprayed or washed near? Outdoor, bathroom, garage, and laundry outlets are the usual damp suspects.
  2. Turn off the circuit breaker for the outlet before touching the cover — wet electrical parts and live power don't mix.
  3. Look at the outlet and its weatherproof (bubble) cover: standing water, fogged condensation inside, a cover propped open, or a cracked or missing gasket all point to moisture as the cause.

Turn the circuit breaker off before removing the cover or touching the device, and don't press RESET until everything is dry. If the outlet keeps re-wetting no matter what you do, or the box shows corrosion or scorching inside, stop and have an electrician sort the weatherproofing and the wiring.

With the breaker off, let the box and outlet dry completely — often a full day, longer in cold weather; a fan aimed at an open, powered-off box helps. Restore power and try RESET only once everything is dry. Then fix why water got in: close and latch the in-use weatherproof cover, or replace a cracked cover or perished gasket so it doesn't recur.

  1. Leave the breaker off. Do not press RESET while anything is visibly wet — you'd only re-trip it and risk a shock at the face.
  2. Open the cover, wipe out standing water, and let the box and device air-dry fully. Warm, moving air speeds it; do not use an open flame or apply heat to the plastic.
  3. Once dry, restore power and press RESET. It should now hold.
  4. Prevent the repeat: fit a proper in-use ("bubble") weatherproof cover outdoors, replace a cracked cover or hardened gasket, and make sure the cover actually closes over plugged-in cords.

The one step that makes a GFCI swap different from a plain outlet: the incoming feed must land on the LINE terminals and any protected outlets on LOAD. And never solve a stubborn GFCI by installing a standard receptacle — that strips the protection the code requires here. Check the legal note for your province: in Quebec this is licensed work, and in Ontario it generally needs an ESA notification. If any of this is more than you signed up for, it's a fast, inexpensive visit for an electrician.

Replace like-for-like with a CSA-certified GFCI receptacle of the same amperage (tamper-resistant, and weather-resistant if it's outdoors — both current Canadian Electrical Code expectations for those locations), wiring the feed to LINE and any protected outlets to LOAD exactly as the old one was. Prove the circuit dead first, keep the LINE/LOAD pairs straight, and check the legal note for your province before starting. Never substitute a standard outlet for the GFCI.

  1. Turn off the breaker and prove the outlet dead with a non-contact voltage tester — both halves — before touching a screw.
  2. Photograph the wiring, then note which wires land on LINE (the incoming feed) and which on LOAD (outlets protected downstream). Getting this pair right is the whole job — mixing them up leaves downstream outlets unprotected.

  1. The timing tells the story: a GFCI that won't reset right after a new install, a renovation, or a swap someone just did is a strong sign of line/load reversed — the feed must land on the LINE terminals, and crossing them defeats the reset.
