- Listen while the heater is actively heating. A percolating, kettle-like popping or rumbling that comes from the tank body (not the pipes) is the tell-tale sign of sediment boiling under a hardened layer.
- Draw a bucketful from the drain valve at the base of the tank. The water is scalding — open the valve slowly, aim into the bucket, and keep hands clear. Grit, sand, or cloudy sediment settling in the bucket confirms buildup.
- If the water runs clear and the noise tracks the pipes turning on and off instead of the tank, sediment is unlikely — look at pipe expansion or the temperature setting instead.

Let the tank cool, shut off the heat and cold-water supply, drain it through the drain valve, then run short bursts of cold water in to stir up and flush out the settled sediment until it runs clear.
- Turn off the heat first: set a gas control to PILOT (or OFF), or switch off the breaker for an electric unit. Then close the cold-water supply valve at the top of the tank. Letting the tank cool for an hour or two makes this far safer.
- Attach a garden hose to the drain valve at the base and run it to a floor drain or outside, below tank level. Open a hot tap upstairs to let air in, then open the drain valve and let the tank empty. The water is scalding if it hasn't cooled — keep clear.
- With the tank drained, briefly open the cold-water supply in short bursts to swirl and push out settled grit. Repeat until the water leaving the hose runs clear.
- Close the drain valve, remove the hose, reopen the cold supply, and let the tank refill fully — you'll know it's full when the upstairs hot tap runs a steady stream with no sputtering. Only then restore the heat (relight per the tank's instructions, or switch the breaker back on).
