Wipe the tracks clean, then apply a garage-door lubricant (silicone or white lithium spray) to the rollers, hinges, bearing plates, and springs. Never use WD-40 — it is a solvent that strips lubricant and attracts grit. Run the door a few times to work it in.

  1. Close the door. Wipe the inside of both tracks with a dry cloth to remove old grease and grit — the tracks guide the rollers and should stay clean, not oiled.
  2. Spray a purpose-made garage-door lubricant onto each roller (where it meets its stem), each hinge pivot, and the bearing plates at the ends of the spring shaft. A little goes a long way; wipe drips.
  3. Lightly coat the torsion spring itself along its length so the coils slide quietly — you can lubricate the spring without ever adjusting or loosening it.
  4. Run the door up and down three or four times to spread the lubricant and let excess fling off. The squeal should be gone; if grinding remains, suspect worn rollers or the opener.

Find the rattling bolts and brackets and snug them with a socket or wrench — hinges, track brackets, and the bolts holding the track to the wall. Firm, not forced; overtightening strips the threads or dimples the door.

  1. With the door closed, run a hand (carefully) or your eye along the hinges and brackets while a helper works the door slowly, to spot which fasteners are loose and rattling.
  2. Using a socket or wrench, snug the nuts and lag bolts on the hinges and on the brackets that fix the track to the wall and ceiling. Tighten to firm — stop as soon as it's solid.
  3. Do NOT loosen or adjust the bottom roller brackets, the cable drums, or anything on the spring shaft — those carry spring tension. If the rattle is there, call a technician.

warning Leave the bottom bracket and cables aloneYou can safely inspect and replace the rollers and hinges along the middle and top of the door. But the bottom roller bracket on each side is bolted to the lift cables, which are under the same extreme tension as the torsion spring. Never loosen the bottom bracket or the cable while the spring is wound — the release can injure you badly. If a bottom roller is the problem, that one is a job for a garage-door technician.
  1. With the door closed, look along the rollers as the door sits. Nylon rollers should be round and smooth; flat spots, cracks, or chips mean wear. Steel rollers should spin freely by hand — a roller that won't turn or grinds is worn.
  2. Check the hinges for play: gently try to wiggle each hinge. Sloppy movement, elongated bolt holes, or bright metal filings around a hinge point to a worn hinge.
  3. Run the door and watch which point makes the grinding or wobble. A single bad roller or hinge often reveals itself as the noisy spot. Replace worn rollers and hinges one at a time so the door stays supported — but do NOT touch the bottom roller bracket (see the gate below).

Adjusting, loosening, or replacing it (or the cables and cable drums it drives) requires winding bars and training, and is a leading cause of serious garage-door injuries.
