A dead ice maker is annoying, but the fix is usually free or cheap — most of the time it's simply switched off, low on water, or overdue for a filter.

In Canada, start with the ice maker itself. Find the wire shutoff arm (paddle) inside the ice bin — if it's lifted up, that's the OFF position, so lower it. If your model has an on/off switch or a control button instead, make sure it's set to On. Free, and the single most common reason ice stops.

Find the water filter (inside the fridge compartment or in the base grille), note the model number printed on it, and swap in a matching new cartridge — then run a few litres through the dispenser to clear air before expecting ice.

  1. Locate the filter — usually a twist-out cartridge inside the fresh-food compartment, or a push-in filter behind the bottom grille.
  2. Turn or pull it out per your model and read the filter model number printed on it; buy the matching cartridge (OEM or a certified equivalent).
  3. Insert and lock the new filter, then dispense two or three litres of water to flush out trapped air, and give the ice maker a few hours to fill and freeze a first batch.
