Refrigerator ice maker isn't making ice

A dead ice maker is annoying, but the fix is usually free or cheap — most of the time it's simply switched off, low on water, or overdue for a filter.

In Canada, start with the ice maker itself. Find the wire shutoff arm (paddle) inside the ice bin — if it's lifted up, that's the OFF position, so lower it. If your model has an on/off switch or a control button instead, make sure it's set to On. Free, and the single most common reason ice stops.

handymanHow to fix it

Lower the wire shutoff arm to its down (ON) position, or set the on/off switch or control button back to On, then wait a few hours for the first batch of ice.

  1. Open the freezer and look at the ice maker: if a wire arm sticks up above the ice bin, press it down — up is OFF, down is ON.
  2. If your model has a switch or a display button (often labelled with a snowflake or "Ice Maker"), set it to On instead.
  3. Give it a few hours. A working ice maker should cycle and drop a first batch; if nothing happens after several hours, move on to the water and temperature checks.

handymanHow to fix it

Find the water filter (inside the fridge compartment or in the base grille), note the model number printed on it, and swap in a matching new cartridge — then run a few litres through the dispenser to clear air before expecting ice.

  1. Locate the filter — usually a twist-out cartridge inside the fresh-food compartment, or a push-in filter behind the bottom grille.
  2. Turn or pull it out per your model and read the filter model number printed on it; buy the matching cartridge (OEM or a certified equivalent).
  3. Insert and lock the new filter, then dispense two or three litres of water to flush out trapped air, and give the ice maker a few hours to fill and freeze a first batch.

visibilityHow to check

warning Thaw gently, and keep water away from the outletA frozen supply line thaws safely with low, gentle heat — a hair dryer on a low setting or a warm cloth. Never use an open flame or boiling water, and don't force a kinked line straight; the tubing can split and flood behind the fridge, where the outlet lives. If the line is cracked or the saddle valve is seized, close the valve and call a plumber rather than fighting it.
  1. Ease the fridge out from the wall and find the small plastic or copper water line and its shutoff (saddle) valve. Confirm the valve is open and the line isn't kinked or crushed where the fridge sits back.
  2. If the line runs through an unheated space (garage, cold basement wall) and no water reaches the ice maker, suspect a frozen section. Warm it gently — a hair dryer on low or a warm cloth — never an open flame or boiling water.
  3. Reconnect, restore water, and give the ice maker a few hours. If the valve or line needs repair or replacement rather than just opening, that's a plumber's job, not a fridge repair.

verifiedPourquoi confier ceci à un pro

Testing and replacing the water inlet valve or the ice-maker module means working with live 120 V electrical connections behind or inside the fridge, often with water nearby. In Canada this is a job for a licensed appliance technician — the part is inexpensive next to the risk of getting water and mains power wrong.

visibilityHow to check

  1. Check the freezer setting and, if you can, a thermometer inside. Aim for about -18 degrees C / 0 degrees F; if it reads warmer, lower the setpoint and wait 24 hours before judging the ice maker.
  2. Make sure the freezer isn't overpacked and that vents aren't blocked, since poor airflow keeps it warm even at the right setting.
  3. If the freezer is properly cold but ice still won't form, look for a small ice plug in the fill tube behind or above the ice maker. Warming it gently with a hair dryer on low can clear it; if it refreezes quickly, an appliance tech should find why.
