Washing machine is leaking water

A puddle by the washer is alarming, but the leak is usually from a loose hose you can reach and tighten — not the guts of the machine. The first job is just finding where the water is coming from.

In Canadian homes, look behind the machine first. Pull it out gently and feel the two hose connections at the taps and at the machine — a loose coupling or a wet, cracked, or bulging hose is the most common leak by far. Hand-tighten a loose fitting; if a hose is old rubber, plan to replace both with braided steel. Know where the hot and cold shutoff valves are before you start.

visibilityHow to check

  1. Locate the hot and cold shutoff valves on the wall behind the machine so you can stop the water in seconds if you need to.
  2. Dry everything with a towel, then run a short cycle and watch the four hose connections — two at the wall taps, two at the machine — for beads of water forming.
  3. Feel each hose along its length: soft, bulging, or cracked rubber is failing. A wet coupling that a gentle hand-tighten stops was simply loose; one that keeps weeping needs a new rubber washer or a new hose.

warning Stop the water and mind the outletIf the machine is actively leaking, close the hot and cold supply valves behind it first — that stops the water at the source. Keep the puddle away from the wall outlet the washer plugs into; if water has already reached it, unplug at the breaker, not by yanking a wet cord, and don't stand in the water. Only work on the hoses once the area is dry and the valves are shut.

Shut off the hot and cold supply valves, unthread the old hoses, and fit fresh braided stainless-steel hoses with new rubber washers — hand-tight plus a gentle quarter-turn — then reopen the valves and watch every connection for leaks before pushing the machine back.

  1. Close both shutoff valves behind the machine (handle crosswise to the pipe), then unthread the hoses from the taps and the machine — keep a towel handy, a little water will spill.
  2. Check that each connection has an intact rubber washer seated inside; fit fresh braided stainless-steel hoses, matching hot to hot and cold to cold.
  3. Thread each fitting on by hand until snug, then a gentle quarter-turn with pliers — do not overtighten, it crushes the washer and makes leaks worse.
  4. Reopen the valves slowly and watch all four connections for a full minute. A dry set of joints means you're done; any bead means shut off and reseat that fitting.

Run smaller loads, switch to HE detergent if your machine is high-efficiency, and use only the small dose the label calls for — the leak that comes with foam is usually a dosing habit, not a broken part.

  1. Don't pack the drum — clothes should tumble with a hand's width of space at the top.
  2. If your machine is high-efficiency (an HE logo on the front or drawer), use only HE detergent; regular soap oversuds badly in these machines.
  3. Measure to the low line on the cap or a single pod, not by eye — more soap does not mean cleaner clothes, just more foam. Run a short load and confirm the suds no longer push water out.

  1. Find the standpipe the washer's drain hose empties into and watch it during the drain and spin, when the machine pumps water out fastest.
  2. If water rises up the standpipe and spills over the top — rather than leaking from the machine itself — the pipe or the drain line beyond it is partly clogged.
  3. Clearing lint and soap gunk from the top of the standpipe may restore flow. If it backs up again, or the clog is deeper than you can reach, that's drain plumbing for a licensed plumber.

warning Unplug before you work at the door sealBefore peeling back or replacing a front-loader door boot, unplug the machine and close the supply valves — you'll have your hands inside near the door lock and drum. Replacing a boot is fiddly and model-specific; if the retaining spring or the tub side of the seal is involved, it's a fair job to hand to an appliance technician rather than force.

verifiedPourquoi confier ceci à un pro

Reaching a cracked internal hose, the drain pump, or a worn tub seal means pulling the cabinet apart around live 120 V wiring and a heavy tub. This is an appliance technician's repair — they can confirm the source and quote it quickly, and the part is usually small next to the cost of a water-and-electricity mistake.
