In hard-water parts of Canada, start under the rim. Hold a small mirror up beneath the bowl rim and flush: healthy jets send water out firmly and evenly; if you see white crusty deposits and water just weeping from the holes, mineral scale is choking the jets. Clearing them with a descaler is a cheap DIY fix and the most common cure for a weak flush.

  2. Healthy jets shoot water out firmly and steer it around the bowl; clogged ones trickle, spit unevenly, or show white/orange crusty mineral deposits around the openings.
  3. Check the single large siphon-jet hole at the very bottom of the bowl too — if it's scaled over, the powerful bottom push that pulls the bowl empty is weakened.

Soak the rim jets and siphon jet with a toilet descaler to dissolve the mineral scale, then work each opening clear with a short length of stiff wire or an old bottle brush and flush to confirm the water rushes in again.

  1. Ventilate the room and put on gloves and eye protection. Apply a toilet descaler or lime remover to the underside of the rim and into the siphon-jet hole per the product label (some people pour warm — not boiling — vinegar down the overflow tube to reach the jets from inside).
  2. Let it sit for the time on the label so the acid can dissolve the scale — do not mix it with any other cleaner.
  3. Work each small rim hole with a short piece of stiff wire or an old brush to break loose the softened deposits, and clear the large siphon jet the same way.
  4. Flush a few times to rinse everything through and watch the jets: firm, even water flow that rushes into the bowl means the jets are clear. Repeat the soak once if flow is still weak.

Raise the tank's water level so it fills to the marked line: adjust the float up on the fill valve, then flush and confirm the tank refills to the right height for a full flush.

  1. Take the tank lid off and find the fill line stamped inside the tank, or note the top of the overflow tube — the water should sit at the line, roughly 2–3 cm below the top of that tube.
  2. On a modern cup-style fill valve, pinch the clip and slide the float up the shaft; on an older ball-and-arm valve, turn the adjustment screw (or gently bend the arm up) to raise the shutoff level.
  3. Flush and let it refill, then check the new level. Raise it a little more if needed, but keep it below the top of the overflow tube so it doesn't run into the overflow.
