A dark thermostat is unsettling, but it's usually something small and local — most often just dead batteries — not your furnace or AC failing.

In Canada, start with the batteries. Many wall thermostats run on two AA or AAA cells; pop the thermostat off its wall plate or open the battery door and swap in a fresh set. It's the single most common reason a screen goes blank, and it costs a couple of dollars to rule out. If a low-battery icon showed recently, this is almost certainly it.

  2. Replace both cells with a fresh matching set (usually AA or AAA — match the size shown), watching the + / - orientation.

Photograph the existing wiring, remove the old thermostat, and mount a compatible low-voltage replacement — matching it to your heating and cooling stages and connecting each labelled wire to the same lettered terminal.

  1. Turn the system off at the thermostat, then photograph the current wiring and note which coloured wire lands on which lettered terminal (R, W, Y, G, C, and so on).
  2. Release the wires and lift the old thermostat off its wall plate.
  3. Mount the new base, feed the wires through, and connect each one to the matching terminal per the label — a like-for-like match means no rewiring.
  4. Insert batteries if the new unit needs them, restore power, and run a quick test of both heat and cooling.

report You'll be inside the furnace's 24-volt wiringChecking the C-wire at the furnace means opening the control compartment, where 120-volt line wiring sits next to the 24-volt low-voltage board. Kill the furnace at its breaker and service switch and verify it's dead before you open anything — the low-voltage side is safe to handle, but a slip onto the line side is not. If working around a live furnace board isn't something you're set up to do safely, landing a C-wire is a fast job for an HVAC technician or licensed electrician.
  1. At the thermostat, gently pull the face off its wall plate and note which lettered terminals hold wires — look for one in the C (common) terminal. A missing or loose C-wire on a power-stealing smart thermostat is a prime suspect.
  2. Turn OFF the furnace or air handler at its breaker and its service switch, and verify it's dead, before opening the furnace's access panel to trace the low-voltage wires to the control board.
  3. With power restored, a multimeter across the R and C terminals should read about 24 volts; a reading near zero points to a break in the C-wire or a blown low-voltage fuse on the board.

With the furnace powered off at its breaker, land the common (C) wire on both the furnace control board's C terminal and the thermostat's C terminal — or fit a matching add-a-wire/common-wire adapter if no spare conductor is available — then restore power and confirm the thermostat holds a steady display.

  1. Switch the furnace or air handler OFF at its breaker and service switch, and verify it's dead before opening the low-voltage compartment.
  2. If a spare conductor runs in the thermostat cable, land it on the C terminal at both the control board and the thermostat. If not, fit a common-wire (add-a-wire) adapter per its instructions rather than guessing at terminals.
  3. Confirm every low-voltage connection is snug, close the furnace panel, and restore power.
  4. Check that the thermostat powers up and holds a steady display, and that it can call for both heat and cooling.
