Slow drains or sewage backing up (septic system)

Slow drains on a septic system are usually a maintenance signal, not a catastrophe — most often the tank is just full and due for a pump-out. The important part is knowing which signs mean stop and call for help.

In Canada, start with when the tank was last pumped. If every drain in the house is slow at once and it has been several years (or you do not know), an overdue tank is the most likely cause by far. Do not open the tank to check — the gases are dangerous. Check your records or last pump-out receipt, then book a licensed pumping service.

report Treat any sewage as a biohazardRaw sewage carries bacteria, viruses, and parasites that make people sick. If any sewage has surfaced — in a tub, a floor drain, or the yard — keep children and pets away from it, wear waterproof gloves and rubber boots before going near it, and never touch it bare-handed. Do not run water that adds to the backup. Afterward, disinfect any surface it touched and wash up thoroughly. Indoor sewage flooding is a job for a professional cleanup service, not a mop and bucket.

handymanHow to fix it

Clear the affected house-side drain with a plunger or a hand auger run from the fixture or a cleanout — never adding chemical drain cleaner to a septic system, which harms the bacteria the tank relies on. If the clog is past the house, or every drain is affected, route to a pro rather than augering blind toward the tank.

  1. Confirm it is a house-side clog: only one fixture or one area is slow, while the rest of the house drains normally. If everything is slow at once, stop — this is a tank issue, not a house clog.
  2. Wear gloves and eye protection; standing water in a blocked drain is contaminated. Try a plunger on the affected fixture first.
  3. If plunging fails, run a hand auger (drain snake) from the fixture or the nearest accessible cleanout toward the blockage. Do not pour chemical drain cleaner into a septic system — it kills the bacteria the tank needs to work.
  4. If the auger cannot reach or clear it, or the clog is in the main line to the tank, stop and call a plumber or septic service rather than forcing it toward the tank.

Opening, entering, or repairing a septic tank or drain field means lethal gases, heavy contamination, and licensed work. People die every year going into tanks to fix them — often a second person dies trying to pull out the first. A saturated field, root intrusion, or a collapsed line needs a licensed septic professional with the right equipment. Keep the lids secured, stay out of the tank, and make the call.

visibilityHow to check

report Septic gas can kill — never lean into the tankA septic tank holds hydrogen sulphide and methane that can overcome and kill a person in seconds, even leaning over an open lid. Only service an effluent filter from the riser at ground level, upwind, and never put your head, arm, or body into the opening — no matter what you dropped in there. Keep the lid secured when you are done so no child or pet can fall in. If your filter is not clearly a homeowner-serviceable type, or any of this makes you uneasy, have your septic pumper clean it.
  1. First confirm your tank actually has an effluent filter — check your install paperwork or ask whoever last pumped it. No filter means this is not your cause.
  2. If it has one and yours is a homeowner-serviceable type, work only from the access riser at ground level. Never put your head over the open port or reach into the tank — the gas inside can overcome you in seconds.
  3. With gloves on, lift the filter cartridge straight out at the outlet, rinse it back into the tank with a garden hose, and reseat it. If the tank is also near full, it needs pumping first — book that instead.

Finding root intrusion or a broken line means camera-locating the pipe and excavating — not something to chase from the house end. Trying to force an auger toward the tank can pack the blockage or damage the line. Have a licensed septic or drain professional locate and repair it.
