In Canada, when a range hood runs but barely clears smoke, the most common cause is grease-saturated metal filters choking the airflow — pull them out and wash them and the pull often comes right back. On a ductless (recirculating) hood, a saturated charcoal filter does the same thing and just needs replacing. If the filters are clean, look at the duct in the cabinet and the vent cap outside for a crush, disconnection, or a stuck flap. A fan that has grown weak and noisy over years may have a failing motor, which on many hoods means replacing the unit. If you ever smell burning or hot electrical from the motor, shut it off and stop using it.

A hood that has lost its pull is usually just clogged — greasy filters or a blocked vent, not a dead motor — and the top fix costs nothing but a sink of hot water.

Slide the metal filters out, soak them in hot water with dish soap (or a squirt of degreaser), scrub the grease from the mesh, dry them, and slide them back — then run the hood and confirm the pull is back.

Release each metal filter (a spring clip or a small handle) and slide it down and out. There are usually one or two.
Soak them 10–15 minutes in the hottest tap water you can run, with dish soap and a spoon of baking soda, or a kitchen degreaser. A dishwasher on a hot cycle also works for aluminum mesh.
Scrub the mesh with a soft brush until water runs through freely, rinse, and let them dry fully before reinstalling — a wet filter back in a live hood is a slip hazard.
Reinstall and run the hood on high. If the pull is back, you're done; set a reminder to wash them every month or two.

Diagnosing and replacing a hood motor means working at the unit's electrical connection, and on a hardwired hood that is fixed wiring, not a plug. Getting it wrong risks shock or a fire behind the cabinet. Turn the hood off and unplug it (or switch off its breaker) before reaching into the cabinet above it, so the fan can't start on your hand.
Open the cabinet over the hood and find where the duct leaves the top of the unit. Check that the hose or pipe is still seated on its collar and follow it for crushes, kinks, or a flex duct pinched behind a drawer.
Note the run: many long sections and several tight 90-degree bends choke airflow even when nothing is broken. A short, smooth, rigid run to the outside is what a healthy hood wants.
If the duct disappears into an attic or a long chase you can't safely reach, stop here — tracing and re-supporting duct at height is a job for a general contractor.

Behind the metal filters, unclip the saturated charcoal filter and snap in a fresh one matched to your hood model. Charcoal filters are consumables and typically last a few months of regular cooking.

Remove the metal grease filters to reach the charcoal filter behind or around the fan opening.
Note how the old one mounts — a twist-lock, clip, or frame — and take it out. Match a replacement to your hood's make and model; charcoal filters are not one-size-fits-all.
Snap the fresh filter in, reinstall the metal filters, and run the hood. Mark the date so you know when it's due again.
