Oven bakes unevenly or at the wrong temperature
Frustrating when one tray burns and the next stays pale — but the fix is often free, and usually the oven is just a little off from its dial, not broken.
In Canadian kitchens this is the free fix worth ruling out first: bake on the centre rack, leave space around pans so air can move, resist opening the door, and remember dark pans run hotter than shiny ones. Adjusting habits alone often evens things out with no repair at all.

- Hang or stand an oven thermometer on the centre rack, in the middle of the oven — not touching the walls or a pan.
- Set the oven to 350 F (about 175 C) and wait a full 15 to 20 minutes after it beeps "preheated", so the temperature truly stabilizes.
- Read the thermometer through the window. A gap of 15 to 25 F is common; note whether it runs high or low and by how much, checking two or three times as the element cycles.
- If it's consistently off, follow the owner's manual to adjust the oven's calibration offset. If it swings wildly instead of settling, suspect the temperature sensor rather than calibration.
handymanHow to fix it
Confirm the offset with an oven thermometer, then enter the oven's calibration menu (per the owner's manual) and nudge it up or down until a 350 F setting actually reads 350 F.
- From the thermometer test, note how far off the oven runs — for example, 20 F low at a 350 F setting.
- Open the oven's calibration or "temp adjust" setting. On most digital ovens it's under Settings; on many dial ovens there's an adjustable screw behind the temperature knob. The owner's manual gives the exact steps for your model.
- Enter the correction (many ovens allow plus or minus 35 F in small increments), then re-run the thermometer test to confirm 350 F now reads close to 350 F.
Adjusting an oven's built-in calibration setting is routine owner maintenance in every province.
visibilityHow to check
- With the oven cool and off, look at the bake element — the metal loop across the bottom of the oven cavity.
- Check its whole length for a visible break, a blistered or swollen spot, or pitting. A healthy element is smooth and unbroken end to end.
- Optionally, set the oven to bake and watch briefly through the window: a good element glows an even orange along its length. Dark, dead sections confirm it's failing.
handymanHow to fix it
Cut power at the breaker (or unplug), unscrew the old bake element from the back wall of the oven, disconnect the two wires, transfer them to a matching replacement element, and screw it back in before restoring power.
- Turn off the oven's breaker in the panel (or unplug the range) and confirm it's dead — this is a 240 V circuit and the step is not optional.
- Remove the two screws holding the bake element to the back wall of the oven cavity and gently pull it forward to expose the wire terminals.
- Note or photograph how the two wires connect, then disconnect them — hold the wire so it doesn't slip back behind the panel.
- Attach the wires to a matching replacement element (same mounting and terminal style), screw it back to the wall, restore power, and test-bake to confirm an even glow.
Owner replacement of a plug-in or breaker-isolated electric bake element is generally permitted; hardwired range work and any gas-oven component are licensed-only. Confirm local wiring rules before publishing.
verifiedPourquoi confier ceci à un pro
Verifying a temperature sensor or a control board means reading it against the oven's control circuitry and, on a gas oven, working around the gas valve and igniter. In Canada this is appliance-technician work — and any gas component belongs to a licensed gas fitter. A tech can confirm which part failed quickly and safely.
