An electric tank that quits usually quits for a cheap reason. The two most common causes are free five-minute checks — a tripped breaker and a tripped safety reset — and this page walks them in the safest order, then is blunt about the one step where 240 volts means you stop or hand off.

If any of this feels off, resetting and diagnosing an ECO is a quick, inexpensive visit for a plumber.
  1. Turn the water heater's breaker off at the panel first — the ECO lives on the upper thermostat, with 240-volt terminals right beside it.
  2. Remove the upper access panel (one or two screws) and fold the insulation back. Leave the clear plastic terminal shield in place — everything you need is in front of it.
  3. The high-limit reset is the red button above the thermostat dial. If it has tripped, pressing it firmly gives a definite click. No click usually means it never tripped — look elsewhere.
  4. Refit the insulation and panel, turn the breaker back on, and give the tank a couple of hours to heat.

  2. Listen while the tank heats: rumbling, popping, or kettle-like knocking is water flashing to steam underneath a sediment blanket.
  3. Factor in age and water: eight-plus years on hard water makes sediment the default suspect. If the tank has never been flushed, assume there's a pile down there.

The power must be off before draining starts and stay off until the tank is completely refilled: elements exposed to air while energized burn out in seconds. Plastic drain valves on older tanks sometimes refuse to reseal; a hose-thread cap fixes the drip. And know that on a very old, never-flushed tank, a heavy flush occasionally clears enough scale to reveal a small leak — a risk worth knowing about before you start.

Power off, cold inlet closed, tank drained through a hose, then the cold inlet opened in short bursts to stir the pile and push it out until the water runs clear. If the lower element already burned out under the sediment, replacing it is the same job as the upper element — same parts, same 240-volt rule, same gates.

  1. Turn off the breaker. Close the cold-water inlet valve on top of the tank.
  2. Connect a garden hose to the drain valve, run it to a floor drain or outside, and open a hot tap somewhere in the house.
  3. Open the drain valve and let the tank empty. Expect cloudy water and grit near the end — that's the point.
  4. Stir the pile: with the drain still open, open the cold inlet in short bursts. Repeat until the hose runs clear.
  5. Close the drain, refill completely — steady, sputter-free stream at a hot tap — and only then restore the breaker.

Turn the breaker off, then verify at the terminals with a tester before touching anything — panel labels are wrong more often than anyone likes to admit. If you don't own a multimeter, or you'd rather not learn to use one at terminals that could be live, this is exactly the moment to hand off: testing and replacing an element is a routine, inexpensive call for a plumber.
  1. Turn off the breaker — then prove it. With the upper access panel off and the insulation folded back, test both element screw terminals with the multimeter on volts (or a non-contact tester first): you must read zero before your fingers go anywhere near the terminals.
  2. Disconnect one wire from the element. Set the meter to ohms and read across the two element screws: the decisive result is open versus not — an open reading (OL, no movement) means the element has burned out. A healthy element reads roughly 12–20 ohms depending on its wattage (higher wattage reads lower: about 13 ohms for a 4500 W element, closer to 19 for a 3000 W).
  3. Now test each screw to the tank's bare metal. Any continuity there means the element is shorted to ground — that's the failure that trips breakers. Either result means replacement.

warning Refill before power — and mind the hot waterTwo ways this job bites. The water you're draining may still be scalding — give it a few hours to cool, or run the hot taps down first. And the tank must be completely full before the breaker goes back on: a new element energized in an air pocket burns out in seconds. If the plastic drain valve won't reseal afterwards (common on older tanks), a $3 hose-thread cap stops the drip.

Drain the tank, unscrew the old element with an element wrench, thread in an exact match (same voltage and wattage, new gasket), refill completely before restoring power, and watch for drips. Note: who may legally do this varies by province — see the note for your region.

  1. Breaker off, and verified off at the terminals (see the check above). Close the cold-water inlet valve on top of the tank.
  2. Attach a garden hose to the drain valve and drain the tank — open a hot tap somewhere in the house to break the vacuum. For the upper element you only need the level below the element; when in doubt, drain it all.

  4. Match the replacement exactly — voltage (240 V), wattage, and the screw-in thread, all printed on the old element's face — fit the new gasket, and snug it in clockwise.
  5. Refill the tank completely before the breaker goes back on: run a hot tap until it flows in a steady, sputter-free stream. An element energized in air destroys itself in seconds.
  6. Reconnect the wires, restore power, and check around the element for drips over the next hour.

  4. Honesty note: this is the least conclusive check on the page. Many pros simply replace a suspect thermostat — the part costs about as much as the time spent proving it.

Swap the suspect one for an exact match (upper and lower are different parts), move the wires across one at a time, and set the dial to 60 °C.
