Signs of mice in the house

A mouse or two is common in Canadian homes, especially as it gets cold — and the first, cheapest moves (cutting off food and sealing entry points) are the same ones the pros start with.

Set snap traps against the walls where you see droppings, baited with peanut butter, with the trigger facing the wall — mice run along edges, not across open floors. Several traps work better than one. Check and reset daily. This handles a handful of mice; if you're catching them for weeks, treat it as an infestation.

visibilityHow to find where they get in

  1. Walk the outside of the house at ground level with a flashlight, looking for gaps around pipe and cable penetrations, dryer and stove vents, the foundation, and where siding meets the sill.
  2. Remember the pencil test: if a pencil fits, a mouse can. Check under sinks and behind appliances inside, too.
  3. Look for grease-marked rub trails, droppings, or gnawing near a gap — that's an active entry point to seal first.

handymanHow to fix it

Pack steel wool (or copper mesh) tightly into each gap and seal over it with caulk or expanding foam; mice can't chew through steel wool. Cover larger holes with hardware cloth or sheet metal. Combine with food removal and trapping.

  1. Store all food, including pet food and birdseed, in sealed hard containers, and clean up crumbs and spills promptly.
  2. Pack steel wool or copper mesh firmly into every gap you found, then seal over it with caulk or foam; use hardware cloth or sheet metal over larger openings.
  3. Set snap traps along the active walls, check daily, and clean any droppings using the safe (damp, gloved) method — never dry-sweeping.

warning Clean droppings the safe way — never drySweeping or vacuuming dry mouse droppings can aerosolize hantavirus particles from deer mice, which can cause serious respiratory illness. Always ventilate the space, dampen droppings and nesting with a disinfectant or 1:10 bleach solution, wait, then wipe up wearing gloves (and a mask in enclosed spaces). Bag the waste and wash your hands after.

verifiedPourquoi confier ceci à un pro

Ongoing activity after you've sealed and trapped, lots of droppings, or repeated returns mean an established infestation that a licensed pest professional should assess and treat, and confirm the entry points.
