Gas furnace burner flame is yellow (should be blue)

First, the safety part: a yellow flame can mean carbon monoxide, so make sure your CO alarm is working — if it is sounding or anyone feels unwell, get everyone outside and call for help from there. With that covered, a yellow flame is often just off-season dust, and it is something a licensed technician can sort out quickly.

In Canadian homes, especially at the first firing after the cooling season, dust settling on the burners is the most common reason a flame turns lazy and yellow. With the furnace switched fully off, you can look at the burners and gently clear loose dust — but flame colour is a combustion signal, so if it does not return to a crisp blue, or you are unsure at all, stop and book a licensed gas technician.

warning A look and loose dust onlyOn a gas furnace, your safe DIY role is limited to looking at the flame and clearing loose surface dust with the unit fully off. Do not remove burners, touch the air shutter, or adjust anything — flame colour is a combustion signal, and a wrong adjustment makes carbon monoxide. If a quick dusting does not restore a clean blue flame, this is a fast, routine call for a licensed gas technician.
  1. With the furnace running a heat call, look through the burner sight window (or the front panel opening) at the flames — a healthy flame is mostly blue and steady; a yellow, orange, or flickering flame is the sign you are chasing.
  2. Turn the furnace fully off at its switch and let it cool, then look at the burner ports for a blanket of dust, lint, or rust flakes sitting on top.
  3. You can gently remove loose surface dust with the furnace off. If the flame does not return to a crisp blue on restart — or you see soot, smell exhaust, or are unsure — stop and call a licensed gas technician.

Setting the primary air shutter changes the air-fuel mix, and getting it wrong produces carbon monoxide. In Canada this is licensed gas work that has to be verified with a combustion analyzer — a licensed gas-fitter or HVAC technician tunes it, never a homeowner.

A furnace that backdrafts is spilling combustion gases, including carbon monoxide, into the house. Diagnosing and correcting venting is licensed gas/HVAC work, and it is not safe to keep running the furnace while you investigate. Ensure your CO alarm works and get a technician in.

report Kill power and gas before you touch anythingBefore removing the flame sensor, turn the furnace off at its service switch and close the gas shutoff, and wait for it to cool. You are reaching into the burner area: live 120 V, a hot surface, and gas are all present if you skip this. If shutting down the furnace and working near the burners is outside your comfort zone, a flame-sensor cleaning is a quick, inexpensive job for a licensed technician.

With power and gas off, remove the thin flame-sensor rod, wipe the metal clean with a fine abrasive pad, reinstall it, and restore power — a routine maintenance task, not a combustion repair.

  1. Switch the furnace off at its service switch and turn off the gas shutoff, then wait for the unit to cool. Confirm the blower has fully stopped before opening the panel.
  2. Find the flame sensor — a thin metal rod with a single wire, mounted at the edge of the burner assembly in the path of the flame. Remove the one screw holding it and slide it out.
  3. Lightly wipe the metal rod with a fine abrasive pad or emery cloth to remove the grey/black film; do not use sandpaper hard enough to score it. Wipe off any dust.
  4. Reinstall the sensor and its screw, restore gas and power, and run a heat cycle. If the burner still will not stay lit or the flame is still yellow, the problem is combustion — call a licensed gas technician.

A cracked heat exchanger leaks carbon monoxide into your home's air. There is no homeowner repair — a licensed technician confirms it and either condemns the furnace or replaces the exchanger. Until then the furnace should be shut down.
