In Canada, start by naming the sound. A steady hum, an occasional pop or crack, or a gurgle and hiss that come and go are the fridge running normally — the compressor, parts expanding with temperature, and refrigerant and defrost doing their jobs. If the sound is intermittent and not new, there's very likely nothing to fix.

  1. With the fridge running, rest a hand on the top and sides. A buzz that dulls or changes when you press means vibration is transferring into the cabinet or its surroundings.
  2. Check the gaps: the fridge should have a few centimetres of clearance and shouldn't be pressed against a wall, cabinet, or countertop that it can buzz against.
  3. Set a level on top front-to-back and side-to-side. A fridge that rocks or reads off-level lets the compressor's vibration rattle the frame — that's the buzz to chase.

Ease the fridge away from anything it touches, then adjust the front levelling feet (or roller screws) until it sits solid and level, killing the vibration that becomes a buzz.

  1. Slide the fridge out enough that no side or the back touches a wall, cabinet, or counter — leave a few centimetres of breathing room all around.
  2. Find the two front levelling feet or roller-adjustment screws behind the base grille. Turn them to raise or lower each corner until the fridge no longer rocks.
  3. Set a level on top and fine-tune until it reads level (a hair higher at the front helps the doors self-close). Push it back, leaving the clearance, and listen — the buzz should be gone.

Pull the plug (or switch off the breaker) before reaching in to inspect or clean the coils — don't rely on the fridge simply being between cooling cycles.   1. Unplug the fridge, then ease it out from the wall so you can reach the back or the base grille at the bottom.
  2. Shine a light on the condenser coils and fan. Grey, matted dust and pet hair choking the coils is the usual cause of a straining hum or buzz.
  3. With the power off, gently turn the condenser fan blade by hand — it should spin freely. Grinding, stiffness, or a wobble means the fan itself is worn, which is a technician's repair, not a cleaning.

Keep the fridge unplugged the whole time, and if the fan blade is stiff or grinding, don't force or lubricate it — that's a sign the motor is failing and needs a technician, not a homeowner fix.

With the fridge unplugged, brush and vacuum the dust out of the condenser coils and around the fan so it stops straining — the most common cure for a hum or buzz from the back or bottom.

  1. Unplug the fridge and pull it out, or pop off the front base grille to reach coils mounted underneath.
  2. Work a coil brush through the fins to loosen the packed dust, then vacuum it all up — including the fan blades and the floor beneath. Keep the brush clear of the fan motor wiring.
  3. Plug back in and listen. If a clean fan still grinds or buzzes, stop here and book an appliance technician — a worn fan motor is a replacement, not a cleaning.
