A silent doorbell is almost always a small, cheap fix — a dead battery, a worn button, or a tired chime — not a wiring emergency.

In Canada, if you have a wireless doorbell, start with the batteries. Replace the cell in the button and, if the chime is battery-powered too, in the chime — then press and listen. If it still won't ring, re-pair the button to the chime and move the chime closer; wireless units drift out of range or lose their pairing over time. Free-to-cheap, and the most common wireless failure.

Unscrew the button from the door frame, clean or replace it, and reconnect the two low-voltage wires to its screw terminals. No power shutdown is needed — this is safe low-voltage wiring.

  1. Remove the two small screws holding the button to the door frame and gently pull it out; the two thin wires stay attached to the back.
  2. Loosen the button's screw terminals and free the wires. If the contacts look dirty or corroded, try cleaning them and reattaching before buying a new button.
  3. If cleaning doesn't restore it, connect the two wires to the new button's terminals — either wire to either screw, polarity doesn't matter on the low-voltage side.
  4. Screw the button back to the frame and press it to confirm the chime rings.

report Test the low-voltage side only — never the line sideThe two screw terminals on the front of the transformer are safe low voltage, and probing them is fine. But the wires feeding the transformer are 120-volt house power. Never unscrew the transformer, open the junction box, or touch the line-side wiring with the circuit live — that's the one genuinely dangerous part of a doorbell. If the transformer is hard to reach, or opening it is the only way to test it, stop and hand this to a licensed electrician.
  1. Find the transformer — a small metal box, often on a junction box near the electrical panel, in the basement, or in a closet. It has two low-voltage screw terminals on its face.
  2. Set a multimeter to AC volts and touch one probe to each low-voltage terminal. These terminals are safe low voltage — a healthy transformer reads roughly 10 to 24 volts.
  3. A reading near zero, with the breaker confirmed on, points to a failed transformer. Do NOT open the box or touch the 120-volt line wires behind it — that side is an electrician's job.

Kill the breaker that feeds it and verify it's dead before opening the junction box — the low-voltage side is safe, but the line side can shock or start a fire if mis-wired. Kill the breaker feeding the transformer and verify it's dead, disconnect the 120-volt line leads and the two low-voltage wires, mount a matching-voltage transformer, wire the line side per its diagram, and restore power.

  1. Switch OFF the breaker that feeds the transformer's junction box and confirm the line wires are dead with a voltage tester before touching anything.
  2. Open the junction box, note how the 120-volt line wires connect, and disconnect them; then release the two low-voltage wires from the front terminals.
  3. Fit a transformer that matches the old one's output (commonly 16 V / 10 VA for a mechanical chime, or higher for a video doorbell). Wire the line side exactly per its diagram and reconnect the low-voltage wires.
  4. Close the box, restore power at the breaker, and press the button to confirm the bell rings.
