In Canada, start by pinning down WHERE the water shows up. Dry the whole unit and the cabinet, plug the sink, fill it, then release it and watch: water appearing at the TOP around the flange points to the most common cause — dried-out plumber's putty or a loosened mount. It is usually a straightforward reseal-and-tighten. Cut power to the disposal at the wall switch or breaker before you reach underneath, and never put a hand inside.

  2. Dry the whole unit and the cabinet floor with paper towel so any new water is obvious. Lay a fresh sheet of paper towel under the unit to catch the first drip.
  3. Plug the sink, fill it part-way, then pull the plug and watch the TOP flange as it drains. Water there points to a failed flange seal or a loose mount — the most common cause.
  4. Now run the dishwasher (if it drains through the disposal) and run water down the drain, watching the SIDE hose clamp and the discharge connection. Water at those joints points to a hose/clamp or gasket leak.
  5. If the top and all the connections stay dry but water still forms at the BOTTOM of the canister, the internal seals have worn through (or the body is cracked) — that is an end-of-life replacement, not a reseal.

With the power off, support and drop the unit off its mount, scrape off the old dried putty at the sink flange, lay a fresh rope of plumber's putty under the flange, reset and retighten the mounting ring evenly, then run water and check the top stays dry.

  1. Switch the disposal off at the wall and shut off its breaker. Place a bucket and towels underneath — you will have some standing water in the unit.
  2. Support the unit with one hand and turn its mounting ring to release it, then lower it clear. Disconnect the discharge and dishwasher lines if they are in the way.
  3. Scrape the old, hardened plumber's putty off the sink flange and the sink opening until the metal is clean and dry.
  4. Roll a fresh rope of plumber's putty, press it under the lip of the flange, seat the flange into the sink, and tighten the mounting ring evenly all the way around so the flange pulls down flat.
  5. Remount the disposal, reconnect the drain and dishwasher lines, restore power, run water, and watch the top flange for a full minute to confirm it is dry.
