Dishwasher won't start
Frustrating, but a dishwasher that won't start is usually a small, free fix — most often the door just isn't latched hard enough, or a setting is quietly holding it back.
In Canadian kitchens, start with the door. Push it firmly closed until you feel and hear the latch click, making sure no rack, tall item, or handle is holding it a hair open. Then press start. Free, and the single most common reason a dishwasher won't begin.

- Open the breaker panel and look for a dishwasher breaker sitting between on and off, or fully tripped. Switch it firmly off, then on, once.
- If your dishwasher plugs into an outlet under the sink, confirm that outlet has power — plug a lamp or phone charger in to check.
- If you have a disposal air-gap switch (a small switch by the tap that also runs the sink disposal), make sure it's turned on; some share a circuit with the dishwasher.
- If power is confirmed and it's still dead, stop here — the fault is inside the unit and points to the control board rather than the supply.
handymanHow to fix it
Cut power to the dishwasher, open the inner door panel to reach the latch assembly, unplug the old latch switch, fit a matching replacement, reconnect it, and confirm a clean click before restoring power.
- Switch off the dishwasher's breaker, or unplug it if it plugs in under the sink. Confirm it's dead before touching any wiring — this is not optional.
- Remove the screws around the inside edge of the door to lift off the inner panel and expose the latch assembly at the top.
- Note how the wire connectors sit on the old latch switch (photograph it), then unplug them and remove the failed switch.
- Fit the matching replacement latch/switch, reconnect the connectors the same way, reassemble the panel, restore power, and close the door to confirm a solid click and a cycle that now starts.
Owner replacement of a door latch/switch on a plug-in dishwasher is generally permitted; hardwired electrical connection work is licensed in some provinces — verify locally.
verifiedPourquoi confier ceci à un pro
The control board and touchpad sit behind the panel with live 120 V connections, and a wrong-part or mis-wired board can damage the machine or shock you. In Canada this is a job for a licensed appliance technician — they can confirm a dead board quickly and source the exact part for your model.
